As you get older it gets increasingly difficult to understand younger generations. The vernacular of your youth is gone. Your generation --whether X, Boomer or Millennial has its code words that younger generations have updated, replaced or flat ignored.

You not knowing is a feature not a flaw for them

I was warned years ago by my children, not to attempt to use their words around them or their friends. You may have the best intentions of wanting to be understood, while perhaps keeping in step with the youth. They won’t have it, and honestly, they don’t want you to embarrass yourself.

Being a card-carrying member of Gen-X, I’ve been old for a while now and can see how utilizing dated words can be cringe. I get a jolt of cringe when I read online posters try and make an obvious point by finishing a statement with “NOT!” I don’t know how Mike Myers feels about his “NOT” still being used thirty-plus years after it’s breakthrough. People just don’t talk like that anymore except for some old Gen-Xers and Millennials trying to funnily make a point, and many times failing to connect with anyone other than their own age group.

Missouri’s Most Searched Slang Terms in 2025

6-7 – This one is still being debated (even by the users) as it gets employed in various ways. It can mean “I don’t know”. It may also mean “messed up”. Keep in mind that the term's ambiguity is a big point of its appeal. There is no official rule for it. If you use it and abuse it, its shelf life will be short.

Chopped – is something ugly. Can be applied to anything you find unattractive.

Bop – Refers to someone that has a high “Body count” of sex partners. Can be used in conjunction with other words too. “Bop House” – a place where girls live and perform provocative acts online for clicks and donations.

Clanker – Negative term for having to interact with online bots or A.I.  You thought A.I. was the cutting edge of what young people were embracing? Not always. They have intelligence standards even for the digital actors.

Sigma – Name for a male that isn’t uncomfortable doing his own thing. Not Alpha, not Beta, not interested in your issues. The Sigma marches to his own beat, and doesn’t care what you’re doing.
