The Monte Cristo is a classic sandwich that blends elements of other meals into one magical experience. Many restaurants have served up this treat over the years. It’s savory, hearty and bursting with flavor. Like most any time-honored culinary standard, there are variations to this delight.

If you are on the hunt for a fine Monte Cristo in Missouri you can bounce around the east and west hubs of the Show-me state in St. Louis and Kansas City and rate all the Monte Cristos you can find. Or, you can drive to Donnie’s Diner, just off Highway 76 west of Branson which Trip Advisor says serves the best Monte Cristo in the state.

Donnie’s keeps their Monte Cristo Classic. Deli ham and turkey with Swiss cheese served between French toast, and they deliver the raspberry preserves on the side.

Variations of experienced include; plum preserves or maple syrup instead of raspberry preserves and multiple cheeses as opposed to keeping it straight Swiss. Some places include caramelized onions in the sandwich and others grill the final product before plating to bring out the deeper flavors of the ham and turkey and melt the cheese more.

At Donnie’s, keeping the Monte Cristo classic shows a confidence in knowing you have it down, and don’t need to get extra creative as the classic is already creative and a wonderful mash up of savory and sweet.
