Quincy fire crews fought the elements as well as an apartment fire Thursday afternoon.

Crews responded to a four-alarm fire at 501 Locust about 2:40 p.m. Thursday.
They arrived to find smoke billowing out of the windows and the building beginning to collapse.

Firefighters wound up focusing on protecting nearby buildings, as well as putting the fire out.

The fire was finally extinguished around midnight.

Crews were hampered by the bitter cold, causing ice build up around the building and on fire equipment.

There was no one in the building at the time of the fire.

An exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
