The Iowa-based store has 31 locations in Missouri and only 18 in Illinois (two in Quincy). I think the reason for the popularity of Hy-Vee locations in Missouri has a lot to do with the Kansas City Chiefs. Hy-Vee is a massive sponsor of the Super Bowl Champs.

The other reason Hy-Vee seems to be popular among Missourians is that it's employee-owned and involves itself in the community.
