Missouri’s Best Sandwich – Hot Salami in St. Louis
How did I miss this? Growing up in the St. Louis metro area I can’t recall partaking of the delicatessen delight known as the Hot Salami. Shrimp St. Paul? Love it, let’s get messy! Pork Steak Sammich, Yes please. Slather it in Maull’s! Was I too preoccupied with those Gateway city staples? Perhaps.
Next time you’re in the Lou seek out the Hot Salami at any number delis in town. Remember like any sandwich or dish there are unique versions and twists on the main theme. So, to be precise you’ll need to conduct your own “to taste” study.
Per Yelp! The five best places to get the St. Louis hot salami sandwich:
Gioia’a Deli - Only open for lunch at the Dagget location. Get there early and order the original, build to taste, or load it up with everything so that all the flavors dance together!
Joe Fassi’s - Also on “The Hill” Joe Fassi’s will give you a slice of tradition with their Hot Salami. Pair with Red Hot Riplets to keep it “St. Louis”.
Protzel’s Deli - As a Jewish deli they keep it kosher at Protzel’s. Serving their hot salami on a kaiser roll with your choice of mustard, cheese all melted together. Geshmack!
Blues City Deli - A few different types of hot salami sandwiches are waiting for you here. The Muffuletta, The 7th Street Sicilian and the Bada Bang with varying types of cheeses and bread with complementary meats. BONUS! -You could very well get a musical accompaniment as blues musicians will play there too.
Charlie's Market On the Hill - Keep it old school and taste the tradition. While others may jazz up their hot salami, Charlie’s keeps it classic, and is a favorite of many in St. Louis. Bonus – fresh baked cookies for dessert!
Extras! The following are a couple St. Louis meat specialists where you can grab a delicious hot salami too!
Volpi Foods - Just a block down Dagget in “The Hill” neighborhood. Volpi’s has a different take on the salami. You can get it sliced super thin and piled up. BONUS- Get some Goat Chips!
Salame Beddu - Inside Parker’s Table supermarket where you can get wines and cheeses they cure their own meats and yes make sandwiches. Contrary to the massive portions you can get elsewhere the goal here is to deliver all the flavor condensed into thin slices and a handleable sandwich.

You'll notice all of these are just neighborhood corner establishments. They aren't super fancy. The focus is the food and they get it right. Seriously, you could stay a week in St. Louis and just eat your way through "The Hill" for every meal.
