October 5th is the anniversary of President Harry Truman making the first every televised address from the White House. That’s a good excuse to mix up the unofficial state cocktail – The Missouri Mule.

Originally created for Truman at the American Bar located inside the Savoy Hotel in London, the Missouri mule is unlike other “mule” cocktails. The three traditional “mules” use ginger beer and lime mixed with: vodka in Moscow mule, tequila in a Mexican mule and bourbon in a Kentucky mule. Other variants follow the same rule. Swapping out the type of liquor. Irish mule – Irish whiskey, British mule – Gin, Jamaican mule – Rum. You get the idea.

Measure it out, Mix it up, and sip it down.

The Missouri mule doesn’t use ginger beer or lime, but instead employs 1 oz. of Missouri bourbon (like Holladay), a half oz. of Campari, a half oz. of Cointreau and 1 oz. of Apple brandy. Oh, and no copper mug is needed. This mule is fancier than that. Mix ingredients and add ice then stir to chill. Finish up by straining elixir into frosty cocktail glass.

Welcome to Missouri. Get good at making and serving up the Missouri mule to guests, and you’ll have many stopping by. So, show ‘em your state pride. Missouri’s only President, the official state animal and the unofficial state cocktail. That balance seems right.
