Missouri Has One of the Oldest General Stores in the Nation
I didn't even know this was a thing, but apparently it is. There are 30 general stores from the 1800s that are still in business and Missouri is home to one of them.
Love Food put together the list of oldest general stores and one stood out. Located in Caledonia, Missouri you'll find the Old Village Mercantile General Store opened in 1909. I can honestly say I am really impressed that this little general store has severed war, a national depression, and inflation, and still remains dedicated to serving their community.
Today the Old Village Mercantile is the only business to survive time in tact with all originality. The rest of the historic district is preserved as homes, shops, and restaurants.
It seems to be more than a general store too. They have events, coffee options, ice cream, gifts, fudge, candy, and just about anything you can think of when it comes to what should go into a general store.
Its longevity has earned it a deserving place on the National Register of Historic Places. You'll find this spot tucked away in quaint Caledonia, a Missouri town renowned for its Scottish heritage.
Such an interesting place to visit, and you can find Caledonia south of St. Louis so it's a drive but it seems totally worth it to experience this long-time-standing business.
