Meramec Caves Considered One of the Best in America
I have been to the Mark Twain Cave, but now I need to make the trip to visit the Meramec Caverns in Missouri.
Picked by one of nine coolest caves in America according to Orbitz, Meramec Caverns is a stunning site to visit. The caverns are also considered one of the largest caves that can be explored by visitors in America. That's pretty amazing to have that in the state of Missouri, known as being the "Cave State." I know Mark Twain had the cave in Hannibal, but you have to wonder if you got some of his ideas from the many caves that are throughout the state.
The caverns are located in Stranton Missouri, was discovered in 1933, and is over four miles long covered in limestone.
Highlights include over four miles of trails, the underwater “Wine Table,” and LED light shows projected across the outsized formations. Plus, Meramec once served as a hideout for outlaw Jesse James.
There is more than just touring the cave in Stranton, At the grounds, you can do zip-lining, stay in a hotel, take a boat ride on the river and really make a fun weekend of your visit. The other caves making the list include:
Luray Caverns: Virginia
Lehman Caves: Nevada
Ape Cave: Washington
Natural Bridge Caverns: Texas
Timpanogos Cave: Utah
Mammoth Cave: Kentucky
Carlsbad Caverns: New Mexico
