The Biggest Baby Born in Missouri Was Over 14 Pounds

Becoming a parent is one of life's greatest joys, but bringing those precious bundles of joy into the world isn't always easy. In fact, it can be especially painful when you discover just how big your baby really is.

The Largest Baby Ever Born in America

The largest baby ever born in the United States, still recognized by Guinness World Records, was born on January 19, 1879.  The baby boy weighed an astonishing 22 pounds and measured 28 inches long. His mother was 7 feet 11 inches tall, so it's no surprise that she gave birth to such a large baby.

Missouri's Record-Breaking 14-Pound Baby

Here in Missouri, the largest baby on record was born in Columbia in November 2012. That baby weighed an incredible 14 pounds, 6.4 ounces. I can't even imagine what either of those moms went through during delivery.

My Experience With Tiny Babies

My girls were tiny by comparison. My oldest weighed just 4 pounds, and my youngest was 6 pounds at birth. That's less than half the size of Missouri's record-breaking baby! Not that I was ever in the running for a Guinness World Record, but I guess I was just meant to have tiny babies.

The Smallest Baby Ever Born to Survive

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the smallest baby ever born to survive weighed less than a pound. In December 2018, a baby girl was born weighing just 8.6 ounces. To put that into perspective, that's about the same weight as a large apple. It's incredible to think that a baby that small was able to survive and thrive.
