Once it's done, there will be very few places like it in the Midwest. The Kansas City Zoo has revealed plans for a new 600,000-gallon aquarium coming in 2023.

The Kansas City Zoo shared some juicy details about what you'll likely want to road trip to at some point in a couple years through their official website:

Zoo visitors will enjoy an up-close and personal experience, beginning at the warm-water shore habitat and traveling “deeper” through mangrove forests, sandy shores, tropical lagoons, and coral reefs. Then they'll “ascend” through a kelp forest and end at a cold-water rocky shore. Each habitat will showcase a variety of fascinating ocean life, immersing visitors in the experience of being at the ocean.

Animations have been shared showing the vision for how the facility will look once it's built.

There are a total of 6 zones that will be built into the Kansas City Zoo Aquarium:

  1. Warm coastline
  2. Warm shallows
  3. Warm reef
  4. Open ocean
  5. Cold shallows
  6. Cold coastline

That's a wide variety of aquatic life. Sounds like it will be everything from sharks to penguins. Very nice.

Now that the Kansas City Zoo Aquarium has been kicked off, now it's just a matter of time before we can venture across Missouri to see what wet fun awaits. Combined with the Sea Life Aquarium at the Crown Center, the big city is gonna have a lot of aquatic options.
