Super Moon Partial Eclipse Tonight In Missouri and Illinois
Starting this evening (Sept 17, 2024) just after 7:30p and ending before midnight there is a partial lunar eclipse visible across the mid-west.
While a partial lunar eclipse may pale compared to the bigger celestial events we’ve seen over the last several years, it is special because it’s also a Super Harvest moon.
The harvest moon is the full moon in Sept that occurs nearest the autumnal equinox.
The super moon is when a full moon happens when the moon is at its’ closest to the earth. It appears bigger and brighter because of the proximity.
The event will reach it’s magnitude around 9:45p this evening.
The next lunar eclipse won’t occur until March 13-14 next year (2025)
Follow along online as many will be out taking pictures and shooting video but the best experience is to get away from city lights, have a telescope and bring others to experience the rare event. Luckily it is scheduled to be clear this evening allowing for maximum viewing. Enjoy!
