At Chez Quaid, we LOVE our rescue Schnoodle “Mr. Chester”. His name came from the way he looked when we found him homeless and sitting on a retaining wall in Quincy.  When the rescue shelter said we had to give them a name for him, I blurted out “Chester”. The name still fits even though he’s not homeless anymore and a full member of our family.

In Missouri the name most given to rescue shelter dogs is “Bear”.  Which is kind of funny really. I get it, fuzzy boy can easily be “Bear” regardless of size. But it's a completely different animal. Makes me recall the frog we dissected in high school biology. The name we gave him was “Horse”. The rest of the top names for male rescue dogs in Missouri are: Teddy, Charlie, Max and Milo.

By far the most common rescue dog name is -"Bear"...???

Female rescue dogs in Missouri have a clear favorite for given name too: Daisy. Followed by: Lucy, Stella, Luna and Lola. The top name given to rescue cats by far is….”Kitty”. Really Missouri? “Kitty”?

The most chosen rescue cat name is....Kitty (seriously)

These names Missourians have come up with got me thinking, what would a good “Missouri” name be for a dog or cat? Do you go with a Missouri city name, or an abbreviation of that city? Example: KC.  Or some other Missouri town name like “Joplin” (that checks multiple boxes), “Arnold”, “Manchester”, “Hannibal”, “Festus” (!!!), or “Branson” or “Jennings” or “Eldon” or maybe even “Dellwood”…???

You could also go the route of using a famous Missouri native for your rescue pet’s name. Like: “Clemens”, “Truman”, “Berry”, “Langston Hughes”, or make it Missouri baseball related. “Berra” keeps it Missouri and provides coverage into “Bear” territory. Win/win. Other Missouri athletes, and ball player names that lend themselves to pet names are: “Pettit” “Yadi”, “Federko”, “McGee”, “Hull”, “Brock”, “Gibson”, or maybe “George” or “Salvi”. How about “Dawson”, “Lanier”, “Mahomes”, “Kelce” or “Reid”. “Dobler” or “Porter” gets you covered on both sides of the state.
