The Missouri Department of Conservation posted on their Facebook page today asking the hunters of the Show-Me State to think about donating their harvest this holiday season. In the post they say...

"Share the Harvest. MDC encourages deer hunters to share their harvest. Missouri’s Share the Harvest program helps deer hunters donate venison to those in need. To participate, take harvested deer to an approved meat processor and let the processor know how much venison is to be donated."

What a really cool idea! I never thought about how much meat is going to be harvested during the hunting season, and I know many hunters only hunt what they themselves and their families are planning on eating, but if you are one of those great (or lucky) hunters who ends up with a lot more meat at the end of hunting season than you thought you were going to have, why not donate it to people in need. This doesn't just go for deer hunters either, on the Missouri Department of Conservation's Facebook page they also include turkeys for anyone who is a big turkey hunter. This is the first time I am hearing about this program, but I wonder if other states do anything like this too?

LOOK: Here Are 30 Foods That Are Poisonous to Dogs

To prepare yourself for a potential incident, always keep your vet's phone number handy, along with an after-hours clinic you can call in an emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also has a hotline you can call at (888) 426-4435 for advice.

Even with all of these resources, however, the best cure for food poisoning is preventing it in the first place. To give you an idea of what human foods can be dangerous, Stacker has put together a slideshow of 30 common foods to avoid. Take a look to see if there are any that surprise you.
