A major utility is warning customers in Missouri and Illinois about a major scam.

Authorities say residents and businesses have been getting calls saying they owe 500 dollars to Ameren. The caller says if payment isn't made, power will be cut off. The caller then requests customers to get a Money Pak Green Dot card, which works like a debit card. When the resident or business calls back, the scammer drains money on the card.

Ameren says it never calls customers requesting payments, and that it works with people who have overdue bills. People who get such calls should hang up and contact local law enforcement.
