Why Don’t We Hear From Our Sister City More Often?
I was inspired by a story I saw this morning about the efforts from citizens in Dull, Scotland to become a sister city to Boring, Oregon. I personally think this is a great idea and apparently so do a bunch of Facebook people since there is now a page created for this project. This brought to mind the fact that we have sister cities to our hometowns and haven't heard from them lately.Quincy became a sister city to Herford, Germany many moons ago. And, according to Wikipedia, it also has a sister city in China. Jiaxing, China to be specific. Admittedly, I'm a bit new to this sister city business. Just last year, I unsuccessfully tried to adopt my own sister city in Tahiti. But, is there some protocol on how often our towns stay in touch? Shouldn't we send the kids in Quincy to sleep over at the house of the people in Herford, Germany every now and then?
In an effort to improve relations between our great cities, here's a YouTube video from Jiaxing, China. How can you not like a city with the slogan "Somewhere between nowhere and history"?
And, how about Herford, Germany? Last time I checked, they have no slogan. But, apparently, it bears an unholy resemblance to Bikini Bottoms since SpongeBob SquarePants has been seen there recently.
If you're currently receiving the sister city newsletter, please let us know. My kids need somewhere to go this weekend.
