It began when native Americans saw the light in the early 1800's and continues to this day. It's a Missouri road that has been haunted by what locals call the "Spook Light" and there's no explanation for the phenomenon that is still visible now.

Legends of America shared part of the story of what's called the "Hornet Spook Light". The twist is that the light is visible from Oklahoma, but it's tied to Hornet and Joplin, Missouri because those are the cities the light appears to hover over.

This is video that was captured in total darkness of night of the "Spook Light" that appears to hover above the road.

The only natural explanation I've heard mentioned to explain the "Spook Light" is ball lightning. Wikipedia defines it as "an unexplained phenomenon described as luminescent, spherical objects that vary from pea-sized to several meters in diameter". The problem with this explanation is ball lightning is normally associated with thunderstorms while the "Spook Light" has been visible for more than a century on clear storm-free nights.

The "Spook Light" even made an appearance on a live TV broadcast many years ago.

I've seen some sites claim that it's nothing more than headlights in the distance, natural gas emissions or perhaps reflections off of a billboard. As for supernatural explanations, I saw a Joplin, Missouri website share the legend of an Indian maiden who wanted to be married to an Indian brave, but they were forbidden. As the story goes, they joined hands and jumped off a bridge over the Spring River and the lights are the brave returning to look for his maiden.

The jury is still out on what the "Spook Light" near Joplin really is. The legend has held up over the decades to the point where full documentaries have been done to try and understand how and why the "Spook Light" appears.
