These two Missouri cities, on opposite sides of the Show-Me state have their own style, culture and flavors. They also acknowledge that the other does some things really well, but not better than their own.

Beer, Baseball, BBQ, and Soccer. There are clear leaders in these departments despite the other city creating quality products. Beer = St. Louis. Baseball = also St. Louis. BBQ =Kansas City, and Soccer? That’s St. Louis too. But what about hot dogs?

In St. Louis Steve’s has emerged as the official hot dog place of St. Louis with the St. Louis Dog that has grilled onions and peppers, banana peppers, bacon, provolone and smoky pepper mustard. It’s “The Lou” on a bun.

In the Kansas City area Up Dog in Independence just got love from Southern Living Magazine as one of the top hot dog joints “in the south”..?? ok. Interestingly, Up Dog doesn’t have a Kansas City style hot dog. They do have a Missouri dog though with pickle, bacon, cheddar cheese and mustard. Other Kansas City hot dogs have leaned into the BBQ flavors of the city with bunt ends on a hot dog..(!!!)

Both places are inviting you in to try the flavors of their part of the state. This is a delicious test to take to find out which side of Missouri’s hot dog debate you land on.
