The dreaded back-to-school shopping season that parents face every year is just around the corner. However, Missouri is giving parents a bit of a break this year with its Tax-Free Weekend.

From August 1 to August 3, parents can save on clothing, computers, shoes, supplies, and more as they prepare for the new school year. And as they say, every little bit counts. On average, parents spend about $840 per child on back-to-school shopping, so if there’s a chance to save, this is the weekend to do it.

What Qualifies for Missouri’s Tax-Free Weekend

During Missouri’s Tax-Free Weekend, sales tax will be waived on:

Clothing items under $100 each
School supplies under $50 per purchase (including art supplies, paper, padlocks, lunch boxes, globes, backpacks, maps, textbooks, flash drives, and musical instruments)
Computer software priced at $350 or less
Personal computers under $1,500
Graphing calculators under $150

Items That Don’t Apply During Tax-Free Weekend

There are some exceptions to the tax-free weekend. Jewelry, belts, purses/handbags, umbrellas, and watches do not apply to the tax-free weekend. So, make sure you know what qualifies and what doesn’t, so you aren’t surprised at checkout when your total is higher than you expected.

There are also a few things you can do to save even more. Go through last year’s supplies to see what you already have and what’s actually needed this year. You don’t need to buy name-brand items; crayons and pencils all work the same, so don’t feel pressured to spend extra just for a label. Your kids likely won’t even notice the difference.
