Missouri is home to several state parks and swimming holes, but due to a harmful algal bloom outbreak, a few of those popular spots are being shut down, at least for now.

Swimming Banned at Missouri Parks Over E. Coli Risk

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has temporarily closed several well-known swimming areas in state parks due to an outbreak of E. coli and toxic algae. The contaminated water can cause illness in people and pets who come into contact with it. The green slime can cause skin and eye irritation, headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

As of now, Finger Lakes State Park in Columbia, Lake Wappapello State Park in Williamsville, and Harry S Truman State Park in Warsaw are all closed until further notice.

The Missouri State Parks Facebook page has issued a warning: If you see green slime in the water, DO NOT go in.

What to Do if You See Green Slime

If you happen to visit a Missouri state park and come across green slime, you're asked to report the lake or pond where you saw it. This allows the Department of Natural Resources to investigate and, if necessary, close the swimming area to help keep visitors safe.

Wakonda State Park

As of right now, Wakonda State Park is not affected by the harmful algal blooms and remains open for swimming and fun. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is closely monitoring all lakes across the state, but also needs your help. If you come across a lake that appears to be affected, please report it so they can investigate and take action.

Hopefully, the closed parks will be treated and reopened soon for swimming and visitors. You can follow the Missouri DNR on Facebook for updates on which swimming areas are temporarily closed.
