Can Police Legally Use Traffic Cameras in Missouri? Yes and No

We know for a fact that traffic cameras are used in Missouri because we see them every day in Hannibal. However, are they really legal? The answer is probably more complicated than you might think.

There's an interesting new article by World Population Review which actually presents conflicting information. Here's what I'm talking about. In their graphic for which states are allowed to use red light cameras, you'll see that it says the Missouri Supreme Court has invalidated their use.

Does this mean that Hannibal is defying the Missouri Supreme Court? Not so fast. (No speeding pun intended)

I checked the Governor's Highway Safety Administration and it explains the issue a little more clearly.

They state that Missouri leaves it up to city ordinances to handle whether or not that part of the state uses speed cameras. Very confusing.

As you travel over holiday weekends this summer, keep in mind that you may very well be watched from above in Missouri by cameras that might send you an unwanted (expensive) gift in the mail.
