Missouri Inmate Moms with Babies Now Have Day Care Option
Have you been in a conversation about incarcerated parents being separated from their children recently? This scenario has been addressed in Jefferson City and will launch at a Missouri Women’s Correctional in a few weeks.
In 2022 the legislature passed a law (SB834) that established a prison nursery at the Vandalia women’s prison. This was to be up and running by July 2025.
With the number of women being incarcerated is increasing again after the COVID-19 dip has created a situation where pregnant women are giving birth behind bars in larger numbers. This day care program is meant to address the situation of mother/child bonding.
Previously, mothers who gave birth in prison would have to surrender the child to family (or give up for adoption) 24 hours after birth. This program is intended to keep families together, prevent developmental issues for the children and keep mom’s emotional well being from impacting her mental state.

The program will allow women who give birth in prison the opportunity to remain with their baby for up to 18 months before other accommodations are required.
Missouri joins nine other states, including neighboring states Illinois and Nebraska, in making these day cares available for new moms in prison.
