Missouri Traffic Lights May Get a New Color—Here’s Why
How strange would it be to see a fourth color on traffic lights? It might sound unusual, but the possibility is becoming more and more real.
Who would have thought traffic lights would need a redesign? For decades, we’ve relied on the simple red, yellow, and green system—so why add another color? The answer comes down to one thing: technology.
A Fourth Traffic Light Color?
With cities increasingly adopting electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs or self-driving cars), traffic systems may need to evolve. Researchers suggest that a new color could be introduced to help regulate the growing presence of AVs on the road.
WHITE.
According to Popular Mechanics, the AI light is suppose to help traffic flow faster. The regular lights will stay, but the white light will be decitaed to the AV cars and send an alert to the driver to pay attention the upcoming intersection.
traffic signal would operate as normal when the percentage of self-driving cars at an intersection is low, but when that number increases, the “white light” signals to human drivers that their robo-motorists have assumed control and to simply follow the car ahead.
Self-driving cars aren’t something we encounter often here in the Midwest, but they are becoming more common in major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York.

This raises an important question: Will all states be required to adopt a four-color traffic light system, or will it only be implemented in cities where autonomous vehicles are widely used?
That is the million-dollar question, I guess.
