If you've driven on a highway in Illinois that feels dangerous, there's now data to prove your instincts were correct. A new ranking shows that 3 of America's most dangerous highways cut right through Illinois.

The Zebra just shared this new 10 most dangerous roads in America recently and among those 10, there are 10 that call Illinois (at least in part) their home.

How did they determine exactly how dangerous a road is?

Data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System was crunched calculating the "most risk for drivers based on the number of fatalities in motor vehicle collisions". Here are the 3 most dangerous roads that go through Illinois in order of the most dangerous.

  • Interstate 70
  • Interstate 80
  • US-41

Interstate 70 through Illinois averages 7.35 fatalities for every 100 miles while I-80 barely trails it with 7.21 fatalities. US-41 which travels north to south along the Illinois border also reports 7.02 fatalities for every 100 miles.

Here's another interesting takeaway from this new most dangerous road ranking. They noted that Saturday had a fatality rate above any other day of the week with the highest percentage of vehicular deaths on that day.

In one year alone, more than 36,000 people lost their lives in auto accidents. It's another one of those reminders of being as aware as possible when driving and never distracted by devices. It's literally a life and death situation and it happens in Illinois often on these dangerous highways and byways.
