Odd Earthquake in Backyard Felt Along Illinois and Indiana Border
Since I am an admitted earthquake nerd, I see many different types of earthquakes and most are not even something that even a USGS seismologist would care about. But, I doubt even they have seen any quake as odd as one that just happened in a backyard along the Illinois/Indiana border.
The USGS earthquake page has been an active place this week with a mini-swarm of quakes along the New Madrid Fault early Thanksgiving morning. But, it was late Thanksgiving night around 9:38pm local time when the USGS confirmed a quake happened practically on the Illinois/Indiana border in a backyard in Clinton, Indiana.
A 2.0 magnitude quake is no big deal, but according to the USGS, it happened in a backyard near where 7th Street and Clinton Street meet which is approximately here.
9 people in the tiny Illinois/Indiana border town of Clinton swear they felt it and probably wondered if their Thanksgiving food leftovers were not settling well.
Are there earthquake faults in eastern Illinois?
This tiny tremor would be a hiccup from the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone. While it's not as active as the more infamous New Madrid Fault, many don't realize that some experts think it's capable of a very destructive earthquake someday. Breaking news: this is NOT it.
If you ask the 9 people along the Illinois/Indiana border that felt it, I'd be the word "odd" would come up in conversation. It's not what you expect in this part of America on Thanksgiving night.
