This adorable town in Illinois was just named the best for a getaway weekend and you have probably never even heard of it.
Welcome to Wilmington Illinois, a small town of just a little over 5,700 residents and located just south of Chicago and known for being a quaint town with lots to do. There are cute downtown shops, antique malls, and historical buildings. The town is also known to have some Route 66 attractions to visit.
If you're into driving the Route 66 road then Wilmington has to be on your list. According to Only in Your State, Nelly's a very popular Route 66 restaurant is your first stop when visiting the town. Not only does it have some of the best food, but the Experience Hub leads you to some other Routee 66 attractions in the town that you have to see.
Two of the major tourist attractions for the town are the Gemini Giant Muffler Man and the Sinclair Dinosaur. And, if you're looking for some really awesome architecture, Wilmington has a movie theatre, still operational, that has been open since 1937, and a home that has been linked to the Underground Railroad.
It's a drive to get to Wilmington, but it sounds like the town is more than just a pit stop it really does offer some amazing Illinois history, a beautiful prairie with live buffalo, and a gorgeous sunflower field that many photographers travel to each year.
You're not going to be bored in this town I can promise you that.
