Most Famous Telescope in History Named for a Missouri Astronomer?
This is literally the most far-out thing I've learned today or practically any other day. Did you know the most famous telescope in history was really named after a Missouri astronomer? Neither did I until now.
The most shocking part of this telescope naming revelation is that I learned it from the Missouri sub-Reddit. See? Miracles can and do happen. Someone shared a Wikipedia page for astronomer Edwin Hubble. It says the following:
"He played a crucial role in establishing the fields of extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology...Hubble's name is most widely recognized for the Hubble Space Telescope, which was named in his honor, with a model prominently displayed in his hometown of Marshfield, Missouri."
Wikipedia is not wrong. As one adventurer discovered, there's even a mini-Hubble telescope in Marshfield, Missouri in his honor.
I have learned that Edwin Hubble from Marshfield, Missouri was one of the first to suggest that the universe is ever expanding. Many probably don't know that Edwin Hubble played a crucial role in World War II helping American projectiles be much more effective against the enemies.
Another interesting and sad aspect of Edwin Hubble's life (and death) is that he passed away in 1953 after suffering a blood clot in his brain and his wife has never revealed where he's buried.
Next time you see a new photo shared from the Hubble Space Telescope, know that it's origins go way back in Missouri thanks to an astronomer of that name.
