Illinois Electric Bus Company Shock Lay Off of 400
An electric school bus company with a plant in Joliet, Illinois announced yesterday (December 8, 2024) that they were laying off 400 employees.
Lion Electric out of Canada is one of three electric bus manufacturers providing a majority of electric buses in the United States.
There is concern in Canada that federal funding from the USA could dwindle with the incoming administration, plus concerns about potential tariffs placed on Canadian products shipped across the border for assembly. If either scenario is employed it would cause the cost of Lion electric buses to increase, which would be problematic for school districts looking to buy, but are on a budget.
Canadian capital investors and The Province of Quebec (i.e. – Quebecois taxpayers) are considering extra investment in the company, but are waiting to see what happens politically here in the U.S. before acting.
There are U.S. electric bus makers. Blue Bird Bus Co. out of Macon, Georgia and Thomas Built Buses from High Point, North Carolina.
