Harry Truman’s Birthday – Should You Care?
If you live in Missouri, then yes - you should care. Truman's birthday (officially called Truman Day) is treated as a statewide holiday, so many Missouri state and county related offices will be closed.
Thanks to Marion County Presiding Commissioner Lyndon Bode, for it was his Facebook post that reminded me of this sometimes forgotten holiday. According to that Facebook post - both Marion County Courthouses will be closed, along with the County Highway Department. Sorry kids - schools are open on this holiday!
President Harry S. Truman was born in Lamar, MO on May 8, 1884. He is the only US President to be born in the state of Missouri.
There are several tributes to the 33rd President in Missouri. The Harry S. Truman birthplace state historic site is in Lamar, MO. north of Joplin and Springfield off Interstate 49. The Harry S. Truman State Park is advertised as an ideal place to vacation. West of Osage Beach, south of Sedalia on Truman Reservoir.
