Hannibal Zombie Run 2012
A new event came to Hannibal this past weekend. If you were at the Autumn Historic Folklife Festival on Saturday afternoon, and noticed a lot of people dressed...unusually, they were probably part of the Hannibal Jaycee's first ever Zombie Run 5K!
Jennifer Foster, chair of the Zombie Run, said that the inaugural event was a huge success:
The Zombie Run was a great success for our first year. We had over 100 runners, great weather and lots of volunteer zombies. Most importantly, if it wasn’t for our sponsorships, we wouldn’t have been able to pull it off. Plus, the purchase of our new building in downtown Hannibal made a great location to hold this event.
Why have a Zombie Run? It was a fundraiser for the organization.
There were extensive costs involved in acquiring our new location beyond the purchase price, including insurance, utilities, repairs, improvements (such as the handicap-accessibility ramp), etc. Many of our members have pitched in and donated their time and skills to work on the building, but we still have a long way to go. Fundraisers like the Haunted House and the Zombie Run are helping tremendously, and we still will be donating a portion of the proceeds from our major events back into the community. We are very grateful to all of the businesses and individuals around the area who continue to support our efforts, both through donations and participation in our events. That said, we look forward to seeing everyone downtown for this weekend for the final two days of the 2012 Hannibal Jaycees Haunted House!
If you missed out on the Zombie Run, Foster says there will be another one in 2013.
I look forward to a bigger and better Zombie Run next year. It will be held the same weekend as the Folklife Festival, but maybe just a tad later in the afternoon for our zombies to really ‘get their SCARE on!’ See you next year!
