Gallop has released its annual "state of the states" rankings, looking at the overall "well-being" of each state in the nation. Iowa did great. Illinois is so/so. Missouri didn't score so well.

According to Gallop, each state was measured for a well-being index, "an average of six sub-indexes, which individually examine life evaluation, emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors, and access to basic necessities."

Of the Tri-States, Iowa scored the highest with a well-being index of 68.2, which placed the Hawkeye State in the top 10 states in the country, at number ten. Illinois ranked 22nd on the list with an index of 66.9. Missouri's index of 64.5 put it in the bottom 10 states, ranking 43rd out of 50.

Iowa dropped a spot from number 9 in 2012 to number 10 in 2013. Illinois raised their ranking from a 28th place finish last year. Missouri dropped from 38 in 2012 to 43 in 2013. The full results of this year's survey compared to last year's can viewed online.

The number one state for well-being in 2013 was North Dakota, and West Virginia came in last on the list.
