Chiefs Potential Targets at WR if Rice Out for Season
Following a bizarre injury where Kansas City Chiefs top receiver Rashee Rice gets injured inducing a fumble during an interception return in Los Angeles by running into his quarterback Patrick Mahomes who threw said interception, the Chiefs are weighing their options at receiver.
Between available free agents, trade possibilities and elevating players within the organization the team has options. Which are best?
A quick trip around the interwebs of NFL opinion, whether from a big network, a podcast or just an opinion piece has provided some ideas:
The following is a list of those players mentioned most in regards to availability and potential fit with KC and Patrick Mahomes.
Free Agents: These players are available now. The Chiefs would have to bring them in for a look to possibly sign.
Michael Thomas – Free Agent that played with the Saints exclusively in his career that started in 2016, was player of the year in 2019 hasn’t reached those heights since an ankle injury in 2020. The 31 year old has only played in 20 games in the last four years with four touchdowns over that span.
Hunter Renfrow -- 5th round pick from Clemson is a free agent that has only worn a Raiders jersey in his career. In 2021 he accumulated over 1000 yds. receiving. The 28 year old hasn’t come close since.
Via Trade: These players could be obtained through a trade with the team that currently employs them/has their rights.
Darius Slayton -- 27 year old has only played with the New York Giants and has averaged 665 yards per season on just over 15 yards per catch. Wouldn’t break the bank and potentially could pick up Reid’s offense pretty quickly.
Amari Cooper – Has played with the Raiders, Cowboys and Browns since coming into the league in 2015. The 30 year old has amassed over 1000 yds. receiving the last two seasons in Cleveland.
Diontae Johnson -- Traded to the Carolina Panthers from Pittsburgh earlier this year and would be a very nice addition as he has been on Kansas City’s radar before. He would be a cap hit and the Chiefs would have to get creative with the $$.
Practice Squad: Kansas City could very well stand pat and activate a receiver from the practice squad who is already on the payroll, knows the system and is a known quantity within the organization. Those players are: Nikko Remigio, Justyn Ross and Montrell Washington.
As Kansas City tries to do what no NFL team has done previously in winning three Super Bowls in a row how far will they go to give the team the best chance to achieve that third consecutive ring?
