The business world is a gamble. Sometimes you win, many times you don’t. But when you don’t, you learn. Tourism can be tricky if you don’t have a natural draw (like Hannibal has Mark Twain). Kudos to Hannibal also for giving things a try like the Steampunk festival and the Comic Cons to build on the historic charm and pull of downtown.

In Quincy there have been many ideas about growing tourism, but nothing has taken hold as THE plan to pull people to the city.  So, we asked

“What would draw people to Quincy?"

Our original ideas were broken down into four areas that had been talked about previously:

Expanding Culture/Arts with a botanical garden/butterfly house

Growing sports tourism with a baseball/softball complex or a 5000 seat arena for basketball/volleyball events that could also be used for conventions (or even concerts)

Building family fun hubs like an indoor waterpark/splashpad with an attached hotel

Finally erecting a riverfront amphitheater or concert venue to host shows.

In addition to these things some others that got multiple mentions were; a drag strip for racing as locals like to race against each other but don’t have a designated legal place for it, and an outlet mall for more brick and mortar shopping choices.

The responses for the most part turned into a wish list for locals instead of a big picture idea of getting people to come to Quincy to visit, spend time and money. Affordability was mentioned several times. A business model will take price into account before anything begins.
