Everyone wants an immersive, authentic experience these days. Whether that’s a fifties diner, a haunted house or a location based on a movie or literary universe. That includes all the vibes from a legit honky-tonk. In Missouri there are a handful of places that claim to get the authenticity of “honky-tonk” right.

The hallmarks of an authentic honky-tonk are: music – the music needs to be thoroughly country, and in most cases upbeat. With the music doing the heavy lifting, a large dancefloor is needed. Plenty of space to line dance or do some two-stepping. A solid honky-tonk will be unpretentious, and not worried about anything fancy. Honky-tonks are for the regular people crowd to just dance, sing, have a beer and have a good time. The beer should be cold, regional and macro. Think Budweiser, not Stella Artois. Coors, not Oskar Blues. Benches and tables, not booths. Not posh, but utilitarian. In Missouri you can find this atmosphere at these locations:

MO Country in Grain Valley is prime. A big place on the outskirts of town, just off the highway with plenty of room. They claim the largest dance floor in the Midwest. They have a mechanical bull, host live country performers and will even teach you to line dance. They do have pool tables and other games too.

Nash Vegas in Columbia is wedged into downtown and is regularly full of coed’s as there are three colleges in town. The space is limited with one side being more traditional honky-tonk, the other more downtown Nashville style.

Fugly’s in East Lynne may be the most pure on this list. East Lynne is well east of Harrisonville, and I can’t find a Lynne, Missouri for it to be east of...(???) It's also in a small old church. They focus on the food and karaoke. And on a random night you may find Kansas City celebs there. You never know.

Ultimately, these places seem fun, and each has their own vibe. Are they that authentic Honky-Tonk experience you are looking for? I leave that up to you. Remember, you may run upon a more legit honky-tonk on a back road in the middle of nowhere instead of a place trying to recreate it.
