It's official: American Idol is coming back! The popular TV singing competition will return to TV in 2018, but this time, on ABC.

"This … is #AmericanIdol -- coming to @ABCNetwork in 2018!" the show's official account tweeted on Tuesday morning (May 9). ABC confirmed the news on its morning show, Good Morning America, shortly thereafter. The show's judges and host, as well as a premiere date, will be announced at a later date. Idol's original host, Ryan Seacrest, recently began co-hosting ABC's Live With Kelly & Ryan with that show's longtime co-host Kelly Ripa.

“I had said at the end of the series, ‘Goodbye for now,’ hoping somewhere it would come back,” Seacrest says (quote via People). “I had no idea it was being talked about to come [to ABC] until late last week, I heard a rumor in the news and made a phone call, and they said, ‘Yeah, it may actually end up here.’ And I said, ‘Well, that’s kind of good to know since I work here.'”

American Idol originally ran on Fox from 2002 through 2016. Throughout its 15 seasons, the singing competition helped launch the careers of superstars Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, as well as other well-known country names such as Scotty McCreery and Kellie Pickler. Keith Urban served as one of the show's judges during Seasons 12, 13, 14 and 15.

Rumors of Idol's return have run rampant in recent weeks. Among those reports its return prior to ABC's official confirmation of the news were TMZ and All Access.
