I rescued Murphy 5 years ago today, on April 16th, 2016 form an incredible organization called Dachshund Rescue of North America or DRNA for short. They are a dachshund rescue group that specifically takes dachshunds out of kill shelters (yes sadly those things do still exist) and foster the dogs until they can find them permanent homes. They didn't know much about Murphy, they found him alone wandering the streets of the southwest side of Chicago near Midway airport. I was specifically looking to rescue a dachshund, because I had those types of dogs growing up, so I knew the breed and what I was getting into, and it was the best $150 I've ever spent. Murphy has been my shadow, and my best friend for five years now, and sure I wish that I'd have seen him as a puppy, and sure since he's now 12ish years old our time is starting to run short, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

There are so many shelters across the country that are filled with dogs, and cats waiting to be rescued, and don't get me wrong, pets are a TON of responsibility, but if you or your family is at the point where you think you are ready for that kind of responsibility think about adopting an older animal before buying an expensive puppy. Murphy was already house broken, didn't have separation anxiety, and I never had to go through the phase where he chewed everything! I'm not going to do the whole cheesy "Who rescued who?" but I will say Murphy has been there for me during massive changes in my life, and I was certainly glad to have him through all of it, and hopefully for more years to come!
