Before we knew about the coyote in the deli case at the Aldi’s in Humboldt Park, there was the coyote on the runway at O’Hare Airport that didn’t survive an encounter with a United Airlines 737.

Sunday morning at one of the busiest airports in the world, in the largest city in the mid-west a coyote made its’ way on the runway as a jet bound for Phoenix was taking off. Irony? Certainly.

A coyote on the runway at Sky Harbor International in Phoenix would be way more likely, way more common. But, Chicago? Keep your head on a swivel Illinois.

Mating season is getting underway in the Canis Iatrans community and will continue through March. Coyotes are on the prowl for mates. This has led some to be creative in their searches. Don’t be surprised moving forward if there are more coyote encounters in the area.

The 737 after liftoff turned around and returned to O’Hare for damage assessment to landing gear as the airline didn’t want to take a chance with completing its route only to find out then that there was an issue.

Passengers were put on a different flight to Phoenix later in the day.
