Hard to believe it's now been 35 years since Tommy Herr caused old Busch Stadium to be covered in seat cushions, but that's exactly what happened when he clobbered a walk-off grand slam.

It was April 18, 1987 with the Cardinals trailing the Mets 8 - 7 going into the 9th inning. The Cardinals had already tied the game with a run in the 9th when Tommy Herr came to the plate with the bases loaded. Baseball Reference has the wild box score from that crazy night.

Coincidentally, it was also "Seat Cushion Night". When Mets pitcher Jesse Orosco made a mistake that Tommy Herr put in the left field stands, bedlam erupted.

That was early in 1987, a season that would result in a World Series appearance for St. Louis against the Minnesota Twins losing the series in seven games. If you recall that season, the Cardinals would go back and forth against the Mets through much of the summer. This 9th inning walk-off would prove to very valuable for the Cardinals.

If you have friends or family that were at that game, you won't find many who still have their seat cushions as most of those given out that night ended up on the field.
