There are a lot of reasons why I’m not an outdoor person, but reason #1? Snakes.

I am so terrified of snakes that when my daughter was little, there was a small garden snake in our backyard, and I ran like Usain Bolt. I’m not proud to admit this, but I left my own child in her playhouse to fend for herself. That’s how serious my fear is.

What to Know Before Swimming in Illinois Lakes

So when a new ranking of the top lakes in Illinois infested with snakes popped up, I made a mental note to remember every single one and avoid them like the plague.

The crazy thing is, multiple lakes are crawling with these creatures. If swimming in those waters is your thing and you’re willing to take your chances, then hey… you’ve got nerves of steel.

Illinois Lakes Known for Snake Sightings

According to World Atlas, the following lakes are considered snake havens:

  • Lake Shelbyville
  • Rend Lake
  • Carlyle Lake
  • Clinton Lake
  • Lake Decatur

All of them are home to a variety of slithery residents. Nope, not for me. I’ll be staying safely inside my house, far away from anything that slithers.

Between mountain lions, bears, and now snakes, that’s more than enough to keep me from camping, or even glamping, all summer long.

However, for those of you who love the outdoors and enjoy swimming in lakes where you can actually see the bottom (you know, like you can in a pool...just saying), more power to you. Just make sure you bring plenty of spray to keep the wildlife away.
