Not that there is state money for such a structure, and there won’t be federal funding for something like this. But with private funding from an individual or group it could be commissioned.

The pertinent question after “Where?” is “Who?”

The “Where?” could be on land already owned by the state. That would be easy. But is any of that state land conducive to a mammoth carving? If it’s already in a state park you are two steps ahead. If not, there would be plenty of work to be done. However, a prime location may not be on state land. The bluffs across from the State capital in Jefferson City, north of the Missouri river could be an ideal place. You’d have to negotiate with the current owner.

The Follow up of “Who” could be nearly as tricky. There are obvious choices. Mark Twain and Harry Truman are gimmies. After that do you go with Scott Joplin? OK. Then who? There are plenty of high profile Missourians to choose from.

George Washington Carver

Born in Diamond, Mo. Carver was a prominent agricultural scientist. Taught at the Tuskegee Institute and developed ways to improve soil that had been depleted of nutrients due to steady cotton planting. Penned many articles aimed at improving the lives and work of poor farmers.

Dale Carnegie

Born In Maryville, Mo. Carnegie had a knack for public speaking and worked toward teaching the masses to comfortably engage groups of many sizes.Perhaps you've read or even gifted his best seller "How to Win Friends and Influence People".

Lamar Hunt

Not born in the Show-me state Hunt planted his AFL franchise (Kansas City Chiefs) on the west side of the state. The AFC Championship trophy is named after him. He also promoted soccer as a sport in the USA and was key in developing the NASL and the current MLS league. The nations oldest soccer tournament, the US Open Cup is now named for him too.

Laura Ingalls Wilder

Also not originally from Missouri an adult Wilder moved to Mansfield, Mo. and purchased land and over the years developed a dairy farm with an orchard and crops. Wilder would then get the chance to write for the Missouri Ruralist, eventually penning her "Little House" books that are so beloved.

Chuck Berry

The Father of Rock and Roll was born in St. Louis. He pushed and prodded rhythm and blues melodies into what we would recognize as early Rock and Roll in the 1950's. Berry was among the inaugural ten inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

There is a Hall of Famous Missourians that is in the Capital building between the Missouri House and Senate. There are certainly deserving names there.

Perhaps Missouri could forge its own path and not be constrained by the Rushmore four and add to those numbers? I guess that would depend on the location and size of surface you were dealing with. But, bluff surface could potentially be expanded before work began.
