WARNING! These are the Most Dangerous Missouri Cities to Drive In
The Show-Me state can be a dangerous place to drive. Missouri is seventh nationally in price of car insurance. Yes there are several factors involved when putting together those numbers, but the only other Midwest state higher on the list is Michigan.
Within the borders of Missouri there are five hot-spots for dangerous driving and accidents.
Independence – The only suburb on the short list. With I-70 and 470 criss-crossing there is plenty of high speed traffic, but it’s the city streets that are the most dangerous. Fatalities are 1.2 the national average there.
Springfield – I-44 and MO 65 intersect here, but like Independence the elevated danger areas are the city streets. Fatalities in Springfield are 1.3 times the national average.
Kansas City – A skein like knot of interstates and state highways with confusing downtown exchanges, plus a propensity for aggressive local drivers to enjoy (seriously) boxing you in to prevent you from getting to the exit/lane/road you need to get to makes for heightened stress and potentially impulsive decision making. Fatalities are 1.4 the national average.
Joplin – Punching above its weight on this list Joplin bucks the city street trend for lethality with the highways being the treacherous areas. I-44 rolls through here and the fatality rate jumps to 1.9 the national rate.
St. Louis – The Gateway city has over double (2.1) the national fatality rate per car crashes. Shouldn’t be surprising as St. Louis (especially 40) is a place where you can regularly witness the traffic busting “fast as you can go in the slow lane” tactic. Even so, the most perilous roads are the city streets in St. Louis.
When traversing Missouri behind the wheel keep your head on a swivel and your wits about you.
