A new scam alert from the Ralls County Sheriff's Office is something everyone in Missouri should be aware of.

What the Scam Message Looks Like

The scam comes via text message, often from a 386 area code, and appears to be a “final notice” from the State of Missouri about a traffic violation. The message may include a link or QR code, attempting to get you to click and enter your personal information. It also demands immediate payment for the alleged violation.

Why Scammers Use Urgency Tactics

The Better Business Bureau says most scams like this create a false sense of urgency and advises people not to respond at all, just delete the text or email. If you do have a legitimate traffic violation, you’ll be notified the old-fashioned way: through the mail, not by email or text message.

The BBB also reminds everyone to never give out personal information under any circumstances, including your Social Security number, banking details, or home address.
