Elite spellers spend hours learning and memorizing the details of words so as to always be able to spell them correctly. A good speller can usually be found in a good reader, but in the world of social media and as immediate as possible communication, spelling abbreviations and flat misspellings are commonplace. Each state has its own hang ups and words that continually confound. The word “Beautiful” is the problem word in the most states: Delaware, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming. “Different” is a troublesome word to spell in: Wisconsin, New York, Kansas and Alabama. In Illinois we have trouble with “Congratulations”, in Iowa the struggle word is “Through”.

Everyone has a word or six that regularly make us doubt we’ve spelled it right – even when we have. Missouri keeps getting “Temperature” wrong.

As a nation we spell many things wrong. Not just the above, but based on misspelled google searches the top five are: Definitely, Separate, Necessary, Believe and Through.
