Missouri is known for some unusual food creations, like using Provel cheese on pizza or the infamous chop suey sandwich. But this one might take the top prize.

What Is the Goober Burger?

When it comes to controversial foods in each state, Missouri’s entry could easily win gold. According to 24/7 Tempo, the most controversial food in Missouri is the Goober Burger, also known as the Guberbuger, a regular hamburger topped with peanut butter and jelly.

Gross, right? I know I shouldn’t knock it before I try it, but honestly, I can’t imagine a burger topped with PB&J tasting good.

The History Behind Missouri’s PB&J Burger

The Goober Burger was first created in Sedalia, Missouri, in the 1940s at the Wheel Inn Drive-In. It’s made with a smashed burger patty, a big spoonful of peanut butter and jelly, and yes, pickles. (Was this invented by a pregnant woman? Because it definitely sounds like something I would’ve eaten during pregnancy!)

Why People Love—or Hate—This Burger

Somehow, the salty peanut butter mixed with beef creates a flavor that people end up craving, and once they try it, they keep coming back for more. It’s become so popular in Missouri that several restaurants now serve their own versions of the Goober Burger.

Personally, I’ve never seen it on any menu at the burger joints I’ve visited, and if I ever did, I don’t think I could bring myself to order it. My brain just can’t wrap around PB&J, burgers, and pickles all in one bite.
