If I've said it once, I've said it a million times. It's very difficult to predict if or when the Northern Lights will be visible when you're located in Missouri and Illinois so temper your expectations. But, you do need to know that thanks to a massive solar event, there's a better than average chance the Northern Lights will be visible over parts of both states over the next few days.

I saw a report from NBC Montana claiming that the Northern Lights would be visible over almost all of Missouri and Illinois late Thursday night into Friday morning. They claim it could happen as far south as Texas.

Here's an optimistic update just shared by NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center on Facebook:

I did my own looking at the NOAA Aurora Dashboard and don't see as optimistic forecast as they're claiming (as of now).

I can confirm this is a serious G3 solar storm that's incoming and more flares are apparently on the way, so it's entirely possible that the Northern Lights COULD be visible of Missouri and Illinois Thursday or maybe even Friday and Saturday night.

My advice would be to grab a Northern Lights forecasting app like My Aurora Forecast and check it each evening to see if your location has a good visibility chance. The skies over Missouri and Illinois might be epic. Just remember I said MIGHT.
