There are some interesting numbers that were just shared by 24/7 Wall St about the involvement of cavalry during the Civil War. In regards to Missouri, the number of troops that fought here is overwhelming:

  • 65,407 Union troops
  • 31,239 Confederate troops
  • 32 regiments
  • 16 battalions
  • 10 companies
  • 96,646 total troops in Missouri

Those daunting numbers mean that Missouri had more cavalry present during the Civil War than any other state in America. Incredible.

The article notes that while Missouri's official side in the Civil War was for the Union, there were plenty of Confederate sympathizers also.

Wilson's Creek National Battlefield in Missouri was the site of what is referred to by the National Park Service as "the second major battle of the Civil War". It was the place where the first Union general was killed in battle during the conflict. It was a southern victory on August 10, 1861, but the loss of life was monumental for both sides.

It's another reminder of the rich history of Missouri as a pivotal part of what became America almost 2 centuries ago.
