Illinois ‘Purge Law’ Paused – Courts Delay SAFE-T Act For Now

The new Illinois law that many have referred to as a "Purge" law won't be enacted on January 1, 2023 as planned. The courts have delayed the law until the appeals process works itself out.

According to WGN-TV, the Illinois Supreme Court has delayed the SAFE-T act that a Kankakee court ruled earlier in the week was unconstitutional.

As we shared back in September, the SAFE-T Act which was scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2023 really isn't a "Purge" law meaning it's not a "all crime is legal for 24 hours" kind of thing like the movie of the same name. As MSN reported at the time:

On January 1st of 2023 the ‘SAFE-T’ Act will commence in the state of Illinois. This act will get rid of the cash bail system in its entirety.

That's not to say there aren't legitimate concerns as "second-degree murder, arson, drug-induced homicide, robbery, kidnapping, aggravated battery, burglary, intimidation, aggravated driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding, drug offenses, and threatening a public official" would be non-detainable."

Needless to say, this is probably the most controversial law that was set to go into effect in the new year. For now, you'll just have to settle for streaming the movie if you want to experience "The Purge".
