When you dig into crime rates, it's important to understand what those numbers represent. I decided to find the places in Illinois where assault is most common not based on someone's opinion or perception, but raw numbers from the FBI. I was surprised to see the 10 that ended up on the top of this violent list.

The most recent full year of crime statistics that are currently available are from the 2024 FBI crime numbers. I queried the databases asking for the number of assaults per capita meaning for every 100,000 residents so that larger populations weren't punished for simply having more people there. Here are the top 10 Illinois locations where assault is most common.

Keep in mind that just because a city ends up on this list doesn't mean the entire town is violent or has crime issues. Every place I've ever lived has had pockets of trouble spots and fine neighborhoods. These 10 Illinois places are no different, but if you simply look at the FBI numbers, this is where assault happens most often which is sad.
