Going to the movies has been an exercise in innovation since the beginning of the medium. Silent films gave way to “talkies”, then color was added. Watching in 3D, Drive-In Theaters, then sound improvements like Dolby surround, followed by THX. Then we were introduced to IMAX. Now we get the 270 degree view of ScreenX.

ScreenX is a new immersive way to experience a movie communally. The screen wraps around almost three sides of the theater. This mimics the kind of view you get from a v.r. video game headset. Your peripheral vision is engaged, giving you the feeling of being more present with the scene on screen.

Marcus Cinema in Addison, Illinois is the first theater in the Prairie state to employ ScreenX. It was introduced originally in the Milwaukee suburb of New Berlin in 2023. Columbus, Ohio and Minneapolis, Minnesota are also onboard to introduce ScreenX soon too.

Movie theater numbers have been low since COVID-19. ScreenX could be a way to get people to re-engage with the shared experience of the theater again by providing a new adventure in movie going that you can’t get at home. There used to be a perspective of having to see certain featured movies on the big screen. This technology speaks to that. Imagine a ‘Star Wars’, ‘Lord of the Rings’, the MCU or ‘Harry Potter” movie with a screen on three sides of you. The action scenes would hit with extra impact.

If movie goers embrace ScreenX, expect many of the biggest movies and franchises to get the 3 projector treatment that this innovation implements with re-releases and special events, plus concert movies will be extra special with ScreenX.
