Select Illinois DMVs Open Saturdays for REAL ID Before Deadline
The race is on for Illinois residents to obtain a REAL ID before the May 7, 2025, deadline. However, the Illinois Secretary of State now has an important update for those still needing to get one.
Everything You Need to Know About Real IDs
For years, officials have encouraged residents to obtain a REAL ID. But what exactly is it? A REAL ID is a federally approved form of identification required for domestic air travel within the U.S. It enhances security and streamlines the TSA screening process.
The deadline for obtaining a REAL ID has been repeatedly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the time needed to upgrade airport security systems. However, the final implementation date is now set, May 7, 2025.
As the deadline approaches, many travelers are rushing to their local DMVs to obtain a REAL ID. In most cases, an appointment is required to complete the process.
I went through the process last month, and while it was quick once I arrived, scheduling an appointment beforehand was necessary.
Until Now.
Several DMVs (including Quincy) have changed from appointments to walk-in only.
Find Out if You Need a REAL ID
Do you really need a REAL ID? The answer is both yes and no. If you plan to travel domestically and don't have a passport, then yes, you will need a REAL ID. However, if you already have a valid passport, a REAL ID is not required.

Since many people tend to wait until the last minute, the Illinois Secretary of State (ISOS) is working to ease the rush at DMVs by reminding residents that a passport is a valid form of ID.
If you do need a REAL ID, several DMV locations offer walk-in services and even have Saturday hours to accommodate the demand.
