According to an article from koamnewsnow.com the Missouri Department of Conservation wants every Missouri resident to be Bear Aware this spring, in the article they say...

"The Missouri Department of Conservation estimates there are 800 black bears in Missouri, with most of them being in the southern region...Biologist Nate Bowersock says it is important that people remove bear attractants from their property, such as bird feeders, trash, barbeque grills, pet food, and food waste."

The article goes on to talk about how you have to do things to help not only yourself but your pets, they say that it is important to keep pet food inside and that you don't want to leave pet food just out because that can attract black bears, to read the entire article for yourself click here!

I will say that I have never had a wild encounter with a bear before and I hope I don't have to ever have one. Bears are not animals that I want to be messing with, and I am glad that the article mentions pet food because leaving out that pet food can attract bears which is obviously a threat to humans but to your pets as well, you don't want your beloved little dog to become a snack for a bear just because you left the food for the dog outside with the dog. Luckily we hear in the Quincy/Hannibal area isn't in the high-risk area of Missouri for bears but you want to always be safe rather than sorry.
